Sensory Assessment - Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament Test

The 5.07 Semmes-Weinstein monofilament consists of a plastic handle supporting a nylon filament. The filament is placed perpendicular to the skin, and pressure is applied until the filament buckles. The filament is held in place for approximately 1 second, then released. The patient is asked to say "yes" each time he or he feels the filament. Failure to feel the filament at 4 of 10 sites is 83% specific for identifying Loss of Protective Sensation (LOPS).

Perform a Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test by CLICKING (touch) or HOVERING your mouse (wait 2 seconds) on each of the 10 sites on both feet. Document for each site whether the patient was able (+) or not (-) to feel the filament. Remember that loss of 4 of 10 sites indicates LOPS.
